BRIAN SANDOVAL NOT WELCOMED AT LAXALT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR NV GOVERNOR?

November 2, 2017

Yesterday, Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt announced he is running to succeed Republican Brian Sandoval for Governor of Nevada. The majority of the political class was at Laxalt’s announcement at the Brady Industries Warehouse and later that day at the Peterbilt dealership in east Sparks Nevada. Lt. Governor Mark Hutchinson introduced Laxalt to the crowd. But Governor Sandoval was nowhere to be seen.

Laxalt came out last month publicly against Sandoval’s key legislation, the Commerce Tax sparking a public debate between the two men. And that wasn’t the first time they publically disagreed on policies. They publically bumped head when Laxalt sued the federal government over the sage grouse land-use plan, Laxalt’s stand against Question 1 in his legal decision that froze the law, Laxalt opposition to the Obama Administration’s transgender bathroom rules and of course Laxalt has been an outspoken supporter of President Trump while Sandoval led the never Trumpers in Nevada throughout the 2016 election.

Even tho Laxalt did not mention Gov. Sandoval by name in yesterday’s announcement speech, Laxalt said “Your leaders should do what they say they will do,” adding “far too many politicians run on a platform of promises they never keep.”

Sandoval ran against any new taxes in 2014, including the Gross Receipts Tax. Sandoval then broke his promise five minutes after winning re-election and passed the largest tax increase in the state’s history. It was later learned that his staff was writing the commerce tax in 2014 while he was running against new taxes.

Sandoval’s monster tax increase and the Republican internal civil war that broke out, lead to the party losing control of the Nevada State Senate and Assembly in 2016. Even Sandoval’s most loyal allies like State Senator Michael Roberson, are now distancing themselves from his record and that episode in our party’s recent history.

So it’s no wonder that Sandoval was not at Adam Laxalt’s announcement for Governor yesterday as the party tries to put the past behind them and move forward together.
