Today Las Vegas Metro Police Department released false and misleading crime stats for 2017 claiming the murder rate dropped by 10%. In fact, by our count and that of other news outlets, there were 169 murders in 2017 not 141. It appears that until a murder charge is produced in a case, LVMPD is not counting a gangbanger shot in the head as a murder in their crime numbers. Metro has also disabled the “LVMPD homicide open cases” webpage on their site.

2018 is an election year and Sheriff Lombardo is up for re-election this year so the crime numbers matter. 2016 saw an 88% increase in homicides, the worst in 25 years. Now Sheriff Lombardo is claiming the murder rate dropped by 10%, down to 141 murders. Not only is Lombardo refusing to count some 28 murders, he is refusing to count the 58 murder victims from the Route 91 Concert in 2017.

In 2010 when Lombardo took over LVMPD, there were 106 murders according to Metro’s 2010 crime report. So if all the actual murders that occurred in 2017 are counted, including the route 91 shooting, there were 227 murders in 2017 under Sheriff Lombardo’s watch. That’s a 120% increase in the murder rate since Lombardo took over and that is not a number he can run on for reelection on.
