FOLKS PANIC BUYING GAS IGNORING THE GOVERNMENT

Nevadans are already panicking and buying fuel. When I stopped for gas last night, the station was already empty, and lines were forming all over town.

Governor Lombardo and other officials urge calm following a Kinder Morgan pipeline fuel leak that led to a shutdown of the pipe in Southern California Thursday. Now the governor has declared an emergency to lift regulations on trucking to get the fuel flowing again.

Gov. Joe Lombardo released this statement:

“Tonight, I am declaring a state of emergency for the fuel pipeline leak impacting Southern Nevada. This emergency declaration will allow us to receive federal waivers and resources as we navigate the evolving repair timeline, and it will allow us to increase transportation of fuel by other means during this time. As we continue to monitor this dynamic situation, our office will remain in constant communication with Kinder Morgan, the Nevada Division of Emergency Management, and Clark County officials. Once estimated repair times are finalized, our office will provide an update. To avoid any unnecessary shortages, I strongly urge all Las Vegas residents to avoid panic buying while awaiting repair timeline updates.”

So far, there is no official word on what caused the pipeline to break. And this just as Lombardo’s fuel tax cut is set to take effect. Officials have not commented on how this will affect the 300,000+ people who plan to visit Las Vegas over this Super Bowl weekend, many of whom will be driving in from California. Will they be stuck here, unable to get home? What about airlines and their fuel supply? BTW, police and fire departments rely on the same gas stations as the rest of us.

Perhaps it is time to build a second pipeline to provide a backup and additional supply in the future? Regardless, this crisis is the first test of Lombardo’s leadership just one month into office.
