ARE THE LOCAL LIBERAL MEDIA TWISTING SHERIFF CANDIDATE TIM BEDWELL’S MESSAGE?

March 4, 2018

This week Candidate for Clark Sheriff, Tim Bedwell, announced his plan to protect local public schools by supplementing the 140 member CCSD police force who are tasked with protecting 347 school campuses with Metro Police officers. The local press twisted his message to imply he wanted Metro to take over CCSD police.

So, here is Retired Police LT. Tim Bedwell in his own words describing what actions he plans on taking as Clark County Sheriff to protect our kids in their public schools today. Sheriff Lombardo is also invited to provide a response either written or video that we will publish without any editing.

I Will Place a Police Officer in Every Public School in Clark County

Tim Bedwell Candidate For Clark County Sheriff:

Yesterday I publicly called for an overhaul of school safety in Clark County. The key provision of my initiative is to place a police officer in every public school. Like with using the National Guard in airports after 911, we must make schools safer immediately, by placing officers on every school campus. Sworn police officers need to be present in schools at all times students are there. Each officer’s sole responsibility – providing safety for the school. Officers shouldn’t teach classes, search lockers for cigarettes or perform other general school management responsibilities. They will provide a safe environment for education.

The key provision of my initiative is to place a police officer in every public school.

In my plan, the level of staffing of each school will be determined in consultation with the Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD). We will focus on day-to-day safety, school ingress and egress, and school functions. We will select officers for this assignment based upon their tolerance, communications skills, and professionalism. I want officers who will act as public safety experts, not ones who will intimidate students. They will not profile students by asking them if they are in gangs or detaining them for breaking school rules.

I will create an investigative and intelligence unit solely tasked to conduct investigations involving threats to schools, with the  aim of preventing school attacks through intervention.

I will create an investigative and intelligence unit solely tasked to conduct investigations involving threats to schools, with the aim of preventing school attacks through intervention. Detectives will follow-up on school threats and reports of potential attackers, investigating the signs that have been missed in previous mass murders. Investigators will work closely with families, schools and County resources to get help for children in need of mental health assessment and treatment.

“I won’t dissolve CCSDPD.”

I won’t dissolve CCSDPD. My long-range goal is to work with CCSD to improve school safety with a better integration of resources between CCSDPD and LVMPD. Over my first term, we will work out the long-range plan which may or may not result in school policing being under LVMPD or better staffed and funded within CCSD control. It will definitely include better LVMPD support.

All students in Clark County deserve a police officer in their schools. We can’t wait until a school tragedy happens here. The Vegas shooting on 10/1 was wakeup call, even if it did not involve a school. Tragedies all across the country prove it could happen anywhere. It could happen here.

A touch of a button or call to the police from any school in Clark County should be responded to with appropriate assets up to the full capabilities of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Not after some calls across town to get approval. Under my plan, it will be immediate.
