According to the Elko County Sheriff’s office, around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, a Union Pacific Railroad train derailed in Wells, Nevada, near Elko caring munitions to Hawthorne Nevada military base for storage and or disposal. Some 20 train cars were involved.

The U.S. government has been pushing the storage of Nuclear Waste in Nevada at Yucca Mountain for 30 plus years and Nevada leaders have been pushing back afraid of just such an accident occurring.

“Let’s just imagine if that accident happened on the railway behind the Strip and what the impact would be, not just on Las Vegas and Nevada, but more importantly on our economy,” Congresswoman Susan Lee said.

Defense Department’s Joint Munitions Command says the train was carrying ammunition to the Hawthorne Army Depot.
