The video, which was provided to 360 News shows Whipple stating that former police officers and military veterans lack the intellectual background necessary for elected office and that they ‘dilute the talent pool”, he directly criticized Governor Joe Lombardo and Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald. “I don’t like the fact that law enforcement has so much control and power in the state of Nevada,” Whipple said in the recording. “Between the Governor and all the governor’s own employees and Michael McDonald. I don’t like that there’s this police level… political… They’re heavy out there in power. Ex Policemen. Ex Sheriffs.” Whipple continued, “I think that dilutes the talent pool because these guys are not smart people. They’re cops. Cops are street savvy but not intellectual people, generally. If all we are doing is electing Ex-military and ex-police. There isn’t a whole lot of experience there, outside what they did in the previous 25 years.” Whipple is running as a Republican and has one primary opponent, Air Force Veteran David Flippo. Public voter registration records show Whipple switched his party registration to Republican roughly one year ago; right before launching his congressional campaign. Nevada has a long history of electing former law enforcement officers and military veterans to public office including Governor Lombardo, Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony, and Congressman Mark Amodei. Several statewide and local officials have backgrounds in policing or the armed forces, and such credentials have often been viewed favorably by Republican primary voters. Several of Nevada’s top Republican veteran and law enforcement officeholders also hold advanced academic credentials, underscoring a contrast to Whipple’s remarks about the qualifications of former law enforcement and military leaders. Joe Lombardo earned a master’s degree in crisis and emergency management. Stavros Anthony holds a master’s degree in criminal justice. Mark Amodei earned a Jurist Doctor degree. Whipple’s primary opponent, Lt. Col. David Flippo, holds a graduate degree and previously attended Virginia Tech before transferring and completing his undergraduate studies. High-ranking military officers, particularly at the field grade and senior levels, are typically required to complete advanced professional military education, which frequently includes graduate-level coursework or a master’s degree as a condition for promotion and command responsibility. Whipple’s education consists of a Football scholarship to Virginia Tech with a degree in animal science. If Whipple advances to face incumbent Rep. Steve Horsford (D-NV), conservatives argue there may be little daylight between the candidates on law enforcement priorities. Horsford has supported criminal justice policies criticized by Republicans as weakening law enforcement and emboldening offenders. Critics say a Republican nominee who publicly dismisses police officers as lacking intellect could blur the contrast voters typically expect in a general election match up. The controversy prompted censure action from the Nye County Republican Party. 360 News reached out to Whipple multiple times for comment. He did not respond prior to publication.
