2020 NV GUN LAW A MISERABLE FAILURE

April 11, 2024

This week, the Biden Administration will issue a new rule requiring gun background checks at gun shows and for private gun sales. On January 1, 2020, SB143 became law in Nevada. The Nevada law made it a crime to sell, transfer, or loan a firearm to a friend or neighbor without first going to a gun store and conducting a background check through the State of Nevada’s background check system. SB143 also closed the so called gun show loophole. Nevada’s law inspired Biden to follow suit.

Stefanie Feldman Director of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention said:

“This is as close as possible as we can get to universal background checks without additional legislation.”

But did the law do what it promised, reduce gun violence? The answer is NO! SB143 is a miserable failure by any standard. According to the Nevada State Crime Statistics Report, in fact, murders dropped throughout Nevada in 2018 with 203 murders down to 143 murders in 2019. But in 2020, the year the new Dem gun law started being enforced, murders skyrocketed by 20% with 184 murders, and even higher in 2021 with 243 murders. 2022 saw a slight drop in murders, down to 225.

There was also a spike in home burglaries, in which guns were stolen from home owners. Last week, 360 News reported on career dirtbag and convicted felon Jarod Robert Walker being arrested with a firearm. He was a felon in possession of a firearm, a felony. This was his fifth time in Nevada being charged with a gun crime. He was previously charged with burglary and theft of guns from homes. He was also charged in 2022 as a felon in possession of a firearm, but the charge was dismissed.

According to LVMPD records, nearly 40,000 handguns were seized by Las Vegas police between 2015 and late 2023.

Under Nevada Dem Attorney General Aaron Ford, his office has failed to bring charges against felons in possession of firearms or to prosecute felons who try to buy guns through gun stores and fail the background checks. Even attempting to buy a firearm by a felon is a crime in Nevada.

Clearly, the gun laws passed by Dems have failed to reduce violent crime and murders in Nevada. The data shows it. But the facts and data don’t seem to matter, nor do the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. We all lost a little bit more freedom and got nothing in return. Remember these facts when you vote this year. And remember this article when Dems call for more gun laws.
