NV DEPT OF EDUCATION TO HOLD SCHOOL TRANSGENDER POLICY HEARING ON GOOD FRIDAY

March 29, 2018

Hispanic parents we spoke with are outraged and offended that the Nevada department of Education and the CCSD would hold a transgender school policy hearing on Good Friday. Just last week the CCSD held a meeting and voted to move forward with a radical transgender policy which would allow boys, claiming they feel like girls, to sleep in the same rooms with girls on overnight school sponsored trips, to use girls’ locker rooms and possibly compete on girls sports teams.

The meeting is scheduled for the NV State Board of Education board meeting this Friday, March 30th. At 11:00 am.

Last week the CCSD Board of Trustees voted, 4-3 to ask Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky to draft policy language that adheres to the language in Senate Bill 225 which instructs the Department of Education to craft a policy that addresses the rights and needs of persons with diverse gender identities.

Opponents argue that the proposed regulations go far beyond the language of SB 225. This sweeping regulation is not based upon a broad legislative enactment but rather a single sentence from SB 225.

“I urge Steve Canavero, the superintendent of public instruction for the State of Nevada to move the meeting to a date that is more conducive to parental engagement and attendance,” added Fisher.

No comment from Laxalt at this time on the issue.

According to Pat Skorkowsky, the policy would affect some 250 transgender students out of a total school population of 340,000 kids.
