ATTORNEY GENERAL ADAM LAXALT CUTS HIS OWN BUDGET BY $1.7 MILLION

March 20, 2017

Press Release From AG Adam Laxalt:

One of the things I’m most proud of as Nevada’s Attorney General is that my office has not only taken historic steps to protect the citizens of our great state — but we’ve done so with a rock-solid commitment to protecting the interests of our taxpayers, too.

Today my office presented our proposed budget to lawmakers, and my team highlighted some of the ways we’re accomplishing more while spending less.

Under my leadership as Attorney General:

We’ve implemented an office reorganization that reduced spending for 2016-2017 by $550,000 compared to the governor’s recommended budget.

In my first two years, we’ve cut outside counsel costs by 75 percent across all budget accounts compared to my predecessor’s last two years in office.

We are requesting $1.7 million less in general fund dollars this session than last.

We’ve eliminated nine general fund positions within the AG’s office.

Just yesterday, my office transferred $3.5 million in settlement money to Nevada’s general fund.

My team has built this record of protecting taxpayers and saving money even as we’ve done more to provide much-needed services to Nevadans.

We’ve made huge strides in clearing Nevada’s backlog of untested rape kits. We created the Office of Military Legal Assistance to ensure that our service men and women have access to the support they need.  And we established a new Financial Fraud Unit — funded by non-taxpayer settlement dollars — to address the growing problem of financial fraud.

In short, we’ve done more with less — setting the right priorities and focusing our efforts on the most important work the people of Nevada need us to do.  And we look forward to continuing to do all we can to make Nevada a better and safer place to live.
